| BURMESE
BURMESE (American and European)
The Burmese originated from Burma and Thailand, and it is generally accepted that all Burmese can trace their ancestry to a cat named Wong Mau, who arrived in the United States in the 1920s. There is some controversy as to whether Doctor Thompson brought her to the United States or whether a sea captain brought her. We are just happy she arrived. The Burmese is a lively, affectionate, and even-tempered cat with a sleek, glossy coat. They are deceptively heavy due to being rather muscular. Bricks wrapped in silk." They continue to be playful long into adulthood and old age. They are also very trainable and sometimes called "dog-cats." Though the original color of the American-type Burmese is solid sable brown, other colors known as dilutes, include blue, champagne, platinum, and tortie colors. American Burmese are commonly bred in two types: traditional and contemporary. The European (Foreign) Burmese is an elegant cat. It is medium sized, with good bone structure and muscular development, expressive eyes, and sweet expression. It is slightly larger than the American Burmese. The major difference between these breeds is the colors: European Burmese can be found in brown, chocolate, red, cream, and tortie colors. CFA distinguishes the Burmese and the European Burmese as two separate breeds.
